Can't Pray to Me
Live from Pancakes Records in Astoria, Queens
On Valentine's Day in 2018, I watched mothers of Marjory Stoneman Douglas students on the news, waiting outside the school building, knowing some of their children would not survive the shooting occurring inside. I started saying my Hail Marys and thought– Mary is the perfect person to intercede for these mothers. She watched her Son's violent death, too.
"Can't Pray to Me," affectionately alternatively titled, "The Mary Song," presents listeners with what I think Mary the Mother of Jesus would have to say about guns in America.
An Americana Roots piece in the style of Springsteen's Seeger Sessions, "Can't Pray to Me" intentionally deviates from Mary's most popular and common praises– "gentle woman, quiet light."
